Summer term often boasts fun and great weather, yet with limited upbeat spaces we have during other terms. In collaboration with campus and community partners, Xpressions of Dartmouth aims to offer engaging programming during the summer term, providing opportunities for the entire Dartmouth community to connect and explore different forms of expression, from engaging in the fine arts and nature, or traveling and exploring a new city and tasting foods from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
We are excited to bring back Xpressions of Dartmouth with a mix of new and returning events. We hope you join us for our FINAL event of the summer, Xpressions of Dartmouth: An Exhibition of Expressions. We invite all members of the Dartmouth community to explore forms of expression complete with local food trucks (Making the CuTx, —, — and Sisters of Anarchy), lawn games, activities, raffles/giveaways, Kona Ice, a live DJ, and your favorite offices and organizations!
Find us on Mass Row from 2-5pm on Friday, August 7th!
7:00 PM – 8:30 PM
Join us for a flavorful evening at Still North Books as we explore the culinary expressions of Italy through storytelling with Italian Program Professor Danielle Callegari. Inspired by her book, A Bite-Sized History of Italy, this interactive Tasting Tuesday invites participants to connect with Prof. Callegari on her work.
Whether you're curious about Italian cuisine, or want to enjoy great food and conversation, this event offers a welcoming space to savor new perspectives, one bite at a time.
3:30 PM – 6:30 PM
Immerse yourself in mindfulness through experiencing Kyūdō (Japanese archery) and the practices of haiku and Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing)!
Kyūdō originated as a Samurai martial art in Japan and evolved into a mindfulness practice. Practicing kyūdō involves relaxing the body, focusing attention, and calming one’s heart/mind for precise drawing of the bow and releasing the arrow. It is a path to opening one's heart and mind to the natural dignity of being human, beyond the obstacles of ambition, frustration, and doubt. Hitting the target is not considered as important as coordinating body, mind, and bow.
You are invited to interact with members of the local Blue Cliff Kyudojo, led by Ray Chin, including Solomon Diamond D’97 and Belinda Chiu D’98. You can also experience haiku writing alongside poet Keysi Montás, and shinrin-yoku (forest bathing).
Come for part of the time or stay for the entire expression!
6:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Looking to green up your living space but don't have a green thumb yet? Join us for Common Roots, a beginner-friendly plant workshop hosted by OPAL’s Xpressions 2026 and the Outdoor Programs Office (OPO)! Come grab a free plant trimming, learn how to care for indigenous plants from the OPO experts, and enjoy a nostalgic treat of Mud Cups (pudding, Oreos, and gummy worms). No gardening experience is required, and you can even join OPO for a follow-up nature walk the very next day to see these plants in the wild. Come dig into a new skill and find your community!
3:00 PM – 6:00 PM
As a part of Xpressions of Dartmouth 2026, join us for an afternoon of fun in the sun! Cookout & Canoes is a free summer event hosted at Tom Dent Cabin where you can paddle the river, enjoy delicious food, vibe to music, and connect with the campus community. We’ll have plenty of equipment available, with special guest Alleah Schweitzer from SWC to lead a mindfulness paddle, lawn games, EMT and safety info, and more!
Grab a bite with options from The Box and cool down with some refreshments, or hang out by the river with equipment courtesy of Ledyard Canoe Club and the Office of Pluralism & Leadership.
This is a perfect chance to soak up summer, meet new people, and enjoy the outdoors.
Need resources on river/water and sun safety as we kick off summer happenings on campus? We got you covered!
Hosted in collaboration with the Office of Pluralism & Leadership and campus/community partners including Ledyard Canoe Club, Student Wellness, 2028 Class Council and the First Generation Office. Free and open to all Dartmouth students, staff and faculty! Dartmouth EMS will also be present for any medical or safety needs.
Come solo, bring a friend, or paddle with a group, but just don’t miss it!
