Discourse at Dartmouth Funding Application

Introduction

The funding application deadline is the first Monday of each month during the term (May 5th, June 2nd, July 7th, August 4th, etc). Applications will be reviewed and decided upon by Friday of that same week. Organizations may apply three times per academic year or up to $12,000.00, whichever comes first. For example, an organization may have three applications approved totaling funding of $5000, which would meet the maximum threshold of approved applications or that organization may be approved for a one time opportunity at $12,000 if, of course, the funding is justified and meets the outlined parameters and guidelines.

Parameters for funding

  • Applicant must consult with organization’s respective sponsoring department for program planning;

  • Applicant must provide itemized outline of anticipated costs;

  • Funded organizations must outline and participate in post-event assessment/reflection.

  • Funding for guest(s) airfare will only be provided at economy fare.

    *Funding will not be provided retroactively.

Funding will be considered for events:

  • Formatted as panel, debate, performance, or cultural exhibition;

  • Open to the College community;

  • Proposed and sponsored by more than one organization;

  • That include a Q & A;

  • That promote critical thinking, listening, and discussion; and/or that foster the exploration of identities, differences, and belonging; and/or that emphasize common understanding; and/or that inspire introspection and promotes ongoing dialogue;

  • That do not include provocateurs or political campaign activities;

Strong applications are detailed, thoughtful, and fully address all required parameters. Applications will be reviewed by a designated committee of staff, faculty, students and alumni in a manner that is viewpoint neutral and seeks to bring programming to campus on a wide variety of topics. In cases where additional information is required, the review committee may request an in-person or virtual meeting with the applicant(s). Funding may be denied and/or negated in the event of a lack of transparency by the applying group(s), if concerns over student and/or campus safety arise, and/or at the discretion of the fund manager.

Funding and Expense Guidelines for Events, Programs, etc.

The Discourse at Dartmouth application review Committee has purview to base approved funding on guidelines and policies set forth by the institution, state and/or UFC-funded groups. Ultimately, we are asking you to be thoughtful in your planning, fastidious in your accounting and to abide by outlined policies.

It is imperative you review and are familiar with the following policies:

Business Expense Policy | Policies.

Privileges and Expectations of Recognized Student Organizations | Policies

If you are having the event catered on campus, it must be provided by an approved vendor unless you are picking the food up. The Committee may suggest modifications based on number of guests or anticipated attendees and information provided and/or funding allocations may not meet the requested amount.

Funding for alcohol for events on campus will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Sponsorship of campus events meeting the outlined parameters

Sponsorship of up to $2000.00 will be considered for the nine groups (COSO Board, Programming Board, Class Councils, Dartmouth Student Government, Dartmouth Outing Club, Club Sports,  and the Greek Leadership Council) that receive direct funding from UFC and, therefore, have a budget from which to fund their own programs. Organizations falling within or under these boards or councils are eligible. Similarly, if graduate or professional groups receive funds directly from student fees or a centralized funding mechanism, they may be considered for sponsorship only. Those organizations eligible to apply for funds from UFC or centrally-funded groups are all eligible to apply for funding from the Discourse Fund.

Post-Approval Financial Guidelines

Any and all unused funds must be returned following the Returning Funds to Dartmouth College process. You will need to upload receipts and attach them to the report when you are returning funds.
